Center “Hub” Topic

The Center Topic for the April 12th Hub Gathering (from 7 pm until 9 pm at in the NEW SMOKE-FREE restaurant/bar/wine/coffee shop of Johnnie MacCrackens (their new space that opened next door to the right of the main bar entrance) :

If the Church Were Christian: Rediscovering the Values of Jesus

We are discussing topics laid out in Quaker Philip Gulley’s book, “If the Church Were Christian: Rediscovering the Values of Jesus”. Similar to our walk thru Brian Mclaren’s book, we will take a chapter or two at a time and discuss our thoughts. While you may wish to purchase this book (now out in paperback) it is not necessary. As we found out with the McLaren book, conversation flowed quite easily just out of the chapter heading! Last month we only got through the first chapter (If the church were Christians…Jesus would be a model for living rather than an object of worship) – there was GREAT conversation generated! But I’ll go ahead and list the next two anyway:

Chapter 4: If the church were Christian…Gracious behavior would be more important than right belief

Chapter 5: If the church were Christian…Inviting questions would be more valued than supplying answers

Should be fun!

Keep in mind:

  • We are not here to “convert” anyone to our particular position, belief or theology – only to share with each other where we are on our own journey so that we might learn from many voices.
  • No voice has more authority/importance than another – M.Div’s/ThD’s are on the same level as laity/armchair theologians. ALL voices are valued in our conversation and must be heard.

Hi Jeff: I have read and studied both of Gulley’s previous books and they literally changed my thinking and way of seeing where I am in my journey. So much of what is in his ‘If the Church Were Christian’ is valuable to my moving forward and a challenge to me to live out those things that I have learned in 68 years of living. Looking foward to how others see the information in his book.
    Peace, love and grace. H.A.Carlton

Hi Jeff. I hope the cohort meeting last night went well. I missed being there for the conversation… and the Guiness:) I thought you might want to see today’s blog because it talks about narrative and the intrigue of our ‘stories.’ Again, the site is http://pattyryleclay.wordpress.com. Feel free to share ithe blog with others in the group,or any of your facebook or blogging friends, as it deals with theology via narrative and seeks to explore many themes of faith in a broken Church and world. Blessings and peace, patty

So glad you came, Patty! I really enjoyed your contributions to the conversation! I hope you might join us for the experimental/experiential worship this Saturday.

I am intrigued and looking forward to ‘experiencing’ the cohort tonight, along with drinking a Guiness:)
